Yes, Silas called it a doppelganger because that’s all stefan knows, but look at what else Silas said. “Shadow self” and a “version of himself” that “can die.”
Stefan is not a doppelganger. Stefan is another version of Silas. Think about it. Could this explain Stefan’s battle with bloodlust (i.e. his constant battle with darkness/evil)? After all, Silas seems to be driven by love, despair, and loneliness, much like Stefan. Who knows? Whatever is going on, it’s beyond being doppelgangers. Stefan, all along, has been a version of Silas who can die.
From what I understood, if Stefan dies perhaps Silas will too. Like the Alaric/Elena spell. That’s probably why he threw him to the bottom of the lake where nobody will get to him rather than just killing him.
